Join Cathy Finch on a 3 night photography tour to LADY ELLIOT ISLAND, the southernmost point of the Great Barrier Reef, for a unique nature-based experience where you will be living in the home of breeding seabirds, nesting turtles, and swimming with an array of amazing marine creatures.
Lady Elliot is the only Coral Cay of the Great Barrier Reef with its own private airstrip. This allows you to be on the Great Barrier Reef in under an hour, where you can snorkel, dive, tour the reef in a glass bottom boat, feed the fish or take a guided reef walk. To enhance this experience, we will be adding to your photography skills. For the absolute beginner, a workshop will take place on the first afternoon/evening where I will guide you through getting to know your camera and getting you off auto (others who have already done my course are welcome to sit in as a refresher if you would like). Throughout the following days there will be endless opportunities to practise your skills at sunrise, sunset, throughout the day, and under the stars if you so desire.
Joining a group of like-minded photographers for the weekend, with a tutor on-hand, increases your rate of learning hugely. You will be inspired by each other, learn off of each other, as well as your tutor, and create like never before. The itinerary will be flexible to incorporate the wonderful marine world around you (tide will dictate many of the activities) – there will be a couple of underwater cameras for your use and also drones if you would like to fly. You may like to try a macro lens or 50mm nifty fifty. I will also have some DSLR cameras for your use if needed. Tripods are a must for slow speed shots and evening stars – again, I will have stock for you to utilise if needed.
A firm itinerary will be released closer to the time, based around the islands activities schedule. Additionally to our “photo meets” of a morning and afternoon, I will be available for 2hrs down-time after lunch each day (changeable by tide), for critiquing and to answer any niggles or hiccups you are encountering. If you would like to bring a laptop (with basic Lightroom or Photoshop installed – you can download a free 30 day trial before you come if you don’t have these), you may like to use this time to learn some basic editing skills to enhance your favourite images – or by now, you may be hooked on scratching turtles backs and be nowhere to be seen – it’s entirely up to you!
Non-photography travel partners are extremely welcome (but beware, we may convert you).
Please visit the Lady Elliot website www.ladyelliot.com.au for a detailed description of your accommodation choices. Lady Elliot prides itself on its ecotourism landscape and beliefs – it is not a 5 star resort, and nor does it want to be. The owner of the island, Peter Gash, is entirely passionate about making a difference, and has never wanted to change the basic living accommodation, but wants rather for you to come to be at one with your environment and the marine life within. It’s simple, but for some - life changing. Note that birds will also be squawking throughout the night – this is a rookery, there are eggs, babies and bird pooh (that at some times of year may give off an odour) all over - bliss for photographers, but just make sure your other halves are ok with this if accompanying!
